Mark the big day in style

By Kath Gannaway
AUSTRALIA Day deserves to be celebrated in style and Badger Creek’s Platypus Restaurant has the perfect combination of Aussie music, food and atmosphere to mark the day.
The restaurant, named after one of Australia’s most iconic “locals” and positioned within cooee of Healesville Sanctuary, is the ideal choice for a full day of Australia Day fun, food and entertainment.
Four-piece band Shazam will return to Healesville for a special Australia Day appearance at the Platypus.
Widely recognised as Melbourne’s premier cover band, Shazam has a dynamic stage presence and a great musical talent for the latest top 40 hits as well as the music of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
Healesville band member Tony Jones says Platypus patrons can be assured of some great Aussie rock’n’roll on the day. Shazam will play from noon into the afternoon.
Chef Lee Hennessy is the creative force behind the restaurant’s extensive lunch and dinner menu.
Hennessy specialises in seafood and international cuisine, but there is plenty on the menu for those who choose to stick with the Aussie theme.
Garlic tiger prawns and crumbed calamari for starters, with kangaroo fillet, lamb back strap and prime porterhouse all topical selections from the mains menu.
The a la carte menu includes two or three vegetarian dishes and there is a tempting dessert menu that includes a delicious mango and passionfruit cheesecake and a trio of sorbets using Australian-grown passionfruit, limes and strawberries.
Families are catered for with a children’s menu that comes with a complementary soft drink and icecream dessert.
With a range of dining options from the stylish dining room to extensive decked areas offering relaxed outdoor eating and the spacious gazebo looking out to the children’s playground, Platypus Restaurant is suited equally well to an intimate dinner for two as it is to a family lunch or group outing.
Why not start planning now to make this Australia Day one to remember.
Book for lunch or dinner at Platypus Restaurant and allow time before or after for a visit to Healesville Sanctuary, or a bush walk at Badger Weir as part of the experience.
Platypus Restaurant in Glen Eadie Avenue, Badger Creek, is open Wednesday to Sunday, on public holidays and on other days by arrangement.
