HEALESVILLE elders gathered to celebrate a milestone birthday for the University of the Third Age (U3A) last week, with 90 people packing into the town’s Senior Citizens Hall.
On Thursday 2 June, the group gathered for an all-day birthday celebration, featuring live music, lunch and speakers to commemorate the organisation’s 10th year.
President Julian Higgs said the day was a success, with founding president Dr Ian Tinney and Yarra Ranges councillor Fiona McAllister speaking and paying tribute to the U3A.
“From our point of view, it was a huge success,” Mr Higgs said.
“We had a lot of really good feedback from people who were there – they really enjoyed it.
“The buzz in the place was just fantastic.”
Dr Tinney ran the attendees through the history of the U3A’s formation, a task spear-headed by Luisa Williams, and its growth over the coming 10 years.
“We used to have meetings around at our lounge room at home. I don’t know if much work got done, but a lot of laughter was had by everyone,” he said.
“They were the early days, but look what it’s done now. Things have just snowballed since then, and, I suppose, you’ve got to ask why.
“And I think the answer is pretty simple – the why is because everybody really gets a benefit out of it – they get enjoyment out of it, they have fun.”
Cr McAllister spoke about her parents’ involvement in the U3A in New Zealand, and how it was improving their lives.
“I hear their experiences of friendship and lectures and workshops and outings and I have to admit, quite sincerely, I can’t wait until I can join U3A,” she said.
“The truly wonderful and remarkable thing about U3A … is that it’s developed and co-ordinated by volunteers on the smell of an oily rag.
“And I marvel at that and, quite honestly, am saddened by it and I hope that’s something we can shift … because I think, with a bit more resourcing, it might make volunteer life a bit better.”
Mr Higgs said the Healesville U3A – one of five in the Yarra Ranges – had about 185 members.
