Charges follow police probe

POLICE investigating the theft of a car from Yarra Glen and an attempt to steal cash from the town’s supermarket last month have laid charges.
A 27-year-old man from Eltham has been charged with the theft of a 1995 Mitsubishi Magna, which was stolen from a private residence on Farrell Avenue, Yarra Glen on Monday, 3 October and recovered from Eltham train station on 18 October.
Police have also charged the man in relation to a failed attempt to steal $2000 cash from the office at the back of the Yarra Glen IGA supermarket on Bell Street.
Senior Constable Leigh Thorne from Eltham CIU said the man was facing a total of eight charges including stealing a second vehicle from Eltham and a theft of petrol from a service station in Donvale.
“Police are very grateful to the Mail newspapers, Yarra Glen police and Lilydale CIU for helping us with this matter.”
Senior Constable Thorne said the man was scheduled to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.
Police praised the Mail for initially reporting the incidents and assisting their investigations.
