TRAINING for Upper Yarra SES members took a turn in a different direction last week.
With the SES Ball just two weeks away, Merril Brunt and Kevin Love turned their attention to honing their dance steps.
The ball is a major fund-raiser for the unit which will use the proceeds to buy essential equipment and pay for running costs such as vehicle registration, fuel and phone bills.
The rising cost of petrol, particularly for a unit whose area goes out as far as Noojee and Woods Point, is putting added pressure on the unit’s funds.
“We’ve all put a lot of effort into the event and we’ve had amazing support from the Bendigo Bank and from local businesses to ensure it is a success,” said Ms Brunt, one of the organisers.
Ms Brunt said people should not be put off by the fact it is billed as a ball.
“It’s an old-time get together and have fun night and people can take the opportunity to dress up in elegant ball gowns, or come along in their best casuals,” she said.
The Horny Toads, a four-piece string band, will be on stage and people are asked to take along a plate for supper and BYO drinks.
There will be lots of raffles, so BYO wallet is also encouraged.
“We are looking to the community to come along and make this a great success,” Ms Brunt said.
“We also need more members, especially people who can help out with day-time call outs, and the ball will be a good opportunity for people to meet the current members and perhaps see if there is a role they can play as part of our SES team.”
The SES Ball will be held at the Warburton Mechanics Institute Hall on Saturday, 8 November.
Tickets are $25 each and available from Ms Brunt on 0409 979 825.
