HEALESVILLE Tennis Club’s Queen’s Park courts were a hive of activity on Sunday for the club’s Open Day and Tennis-A-Thon.
Members and visitors took to the six courts to raise $40,000 for resurfacing courts three and four and upgrading of lights on four of the courts.
The upgrade is part of the club’s water-saving initiatives.
Players of all ages, from beginners and visiting players to mid-week ladies, juniors, seniors and veterans kept the action going on all six courts.
The award for Longest on Court in the juniors went to Robert Cameron who played an amazing seven hours, closely followed by Tom Nolan who notched up six hours on the court.
Shona Cameron, Robert’s sister, was awarded the senior title with six and a half hours at the nets.
The Bauce family, including mini-tennis dynamos Kye and Daniel, raised the most sponsorship money. The family came down from Bendigo to support the boys’ grandparents Peter and Jan Brown who are club members.
A highlight of the day was the presentation of a cheque for $1000 by Healesville Lions Club towards the resurfacing campaign.
The club’s sponsorship campaign is continuing with local businesses and club members invited to sponsor a square metre of court for $76 or half a square metre for $38. Donations are tax deductible and cheques can be made out to the Australian Sports Foundation Ltd for the HTC Court Redevelopment Project ASF#208215. They can be mailed to Healesville Tennis Club, PO Box 586, Healesville, 3777.
Any queries about the club’s activites can be directed to president Kathy Cameron on 5962 3639.
