PARENTS have the most important job in the world.
Many choose to parent their children on a full time basis at least during the early years.
This can mean a parent or carer may have been out of the workplace for anywhere between two to 20 years.
The workplace is in a constant state of change.
It is possible that a certain job that a person had when they left the workplace 10 years ago does not exist any more.
It may be that a parent does not want to go back into the same field they were in prior to having children.
Computer technology now permeates through most workplaces and job descriptions. Many workers now communicate both with internal and external customers via the internet and email.
Parents and others who have been out of the workplace for a period of time often need training for a number of reasons.
These can include learning new skills, re-learning or updating old skills or just to gain confidence to know they are work ready.
Sometimes people will need to do a bridging course to gain the confidence and/or the prerequisites as a pathway to a higher course, which will in turn help them into a new career.
Upper Yarra Community House (UYCH) has state government grants of up to $1,000 worth of free training for those who are eligible.
The training can be used for any courses offered by UYCH as long as the course is for the purpose of skills for work. Training includes formal courses for areas such as childcare, aged care, horticulture, hospitality and business, and finance.
UYCH has put together a special course from October until early December for those contemplating returning to study and/or paid workplace.
It will be run one day per week (Mondays) and includes skills such as computers, communication, teamwork, resume writing and interview skills. The cost of the course is normally $660.
This course can give you the prerequisites and confidence to enrol in a more formal course next year.
The extra $340 in fees can go towards a course of your choosing next year.
The $1,000 grant can be used for childcare costs during the training.
Also UYCH will be taking expressions of interest from those eligible persons who wish to apply for one of the $1,000 Returning to Earnings grants to be used fully for a course in 2009.
