DAISY is 70something, has a gentleman friend 20 years her junior and has had a recent hip replacement.
Her sister, Gert, two years younger, is given to seeing things of a psychic nature.
That sets the scene for the awardwinning Gert and Daisy, a humorous, warm, irreverent romp by Healesville actress/playwright Alwyn Lewis.
The play, which was awarded for Best Script at the North Coast Drama Festival in 2002 will play at Warburton on Saturday, 12 November.
“The play leaves you in no doubt that, no matter where we stand, or try to stand, in the ultimate scheme of things, age is in the eye of the beholder,” said Alwyn’s husband, Laurie, who will provide musical accompaniment on the pianoforte.
Daisy, the elder of the two will be played by wellknown actress Shirley Cattunar.
In addition to her youngish gentleman friend, she is given to delusions of a rather grand nature.
Gert, played by Alwyn, considers herself to be blessed with psychic abilities the result of several paranormal experiences.
Alwyn wrote the play before moving to Victoria four years ago.
“It’s a play about sisters, but people of all ages identify with it. It appeals to a wide audience,” Alwyn said following the play’s Melbourne premier at the Healesville Senior Citizens Club in June 2004.
Since then it has toured regional New South Wales to hugely appreciative audiences and had an equally wellreceived five night season at the Brighton Theatre earlier this year.
Gert and Daisy will play, one night only, at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre. Tickets are $12 and $10 concession.
