FOUR baby Blue Tongue Lizards are on the mend at Healesville Sanctuary, after being rescued from their dying mother in an emergency operation earlier today.
The lizard was brought into Healesville Sanctuary’s Animal Wildlife Health Centre today at around noon today (Tuesday 3 February), after being attacked on a Christmas Hills property.
Vets at the Sanctuary believe the lizard was attacked by a dog, and the lizard died while under anaesthetic during emergency surgery.
After vets conducted an X-ray, it was discovered that the lizard was pregnant with 13 babies, and all were removed in an emergency caesarean operation.
Four of the lizards have since woken up, while nine have yet to respond and are expected not to survive.
Veterinary nurse Emmajane Newton said the lizards, which were only a few hours old, would be released in the coming days, once vets confirmed they were healthy and well.
