THE SUCCESS of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow at Healesville’s Memorial Hall on Saturday night was seen as a positive indication of more live theatre for Healesville.
Even the comedians touched on the “under utilisation” of the hall.
“I read in the Mail that this place is under utilised,” headliner Damian Callinan said.
“I think I know why?” he added pulling out a sign he’d taken from the front door of the Memorial Hall.
“Please keep these doors shut, it stops the leaves blowing in … no wonder its under utilised,” he chided before launching into the dangers leaves running rampant might pose to unsuspecting performers … or audience members!
More than 200 people, many of them teenagers, more than a few in their “senior” years, laughed and clapped in appreciation of the wit (and wisdom!!) of some of the state’s top comedy talent.
MC Dave Williams set the pace for former Yarra Glen girl Celia Pacquola, Anthony Menchetti Callinan and Dave Thornton.
The audience clearly loved the opportunity to tap into top-class, topical entertainment on their doorstep.
Shire of Yarra Ranges Cultural Planning and Marketing coordinator, Dion Teasdale, said the roadshow was seen as a good show to test the water in terms of the response from Healesville audiences.
Cr Jeanette McRae who has pushed in council for more staffing resources for the Memorial Hall and more live theatre, said she was elated that the Healesville community had supported the event.
“I think it’s a great indication that Healesville is ready for performances and programs at the Memo Hall,” she said.
She congratulated the shire’s Cultural Services team which she said had put in a fantastic effort to coordinate the event and ensured it ran smoothly.
“I’m looking forward to a regular program of events,” Cr McRae said.
