THE shire’s pool backwash projects are well under way, with tanks now collecting water at the Yarra Centre swimming pool.
The shire received $240,000 in State Government funding last year to carry out pool backwash re-use works, with $200,000 being provided by Regional Development Victoria and a further $40,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria.
The works will allow pool water at Yarra Junction, Kilsyth and Lilydale to be treated and used to water nearby ovals.
Yarra Ranges councillor Monika Keane said three tanks had been installed at Yarra Junction pool, each able to collect 22,000 litres of backwash water.
Four more tanks of the same capacity have also been installed to collect storm water.
“Collecting and re-using pool backwash water for irrigation will help us keep our sporting grounds safe for users, particularly over drier months,” Cr Keane said.
“Before the tanks were installed, pool backwash water was discharged to waste, so this is a wonderful way for us to recycle water and help maintain our sporting grounds as we continue to operate under Stage 3a water restrictions.”
Pool backwash works have also been completed at Kilsyth Centenary Pool, where a 125,000-litre tank has been installed, while the installation of a 90,000-litre tank is almost complete at Lilydale Swimming Pool.
