Smooth the bumps

“PEOPLE are often surprised when I tell them I work with children. Especially when they hear that the youngest I have treated was eight days old,” says osteopath Paula Henderson.
Ms Henderson said the stresses that occur during birth, the bumps and falls as a child grows can all create areas of restriction or dysfunction within the infant or child’s body.
“This in turn can create irritation of the nervous system leading to such conditions as reflux, babies who cannot settle, recurring ear or throat infections, coordination difficulties, to name a few,” she added.
“One of the first toddlers I treated had fluid in his left ear. He responded so well that the paediatrician was able to confirm that the fluid had drained and no other intervention would be necessary.
“The beauty about working with children is that their bodies are generally able to readily respond to treatment with a minimum of intervention,” Ms Henderson said.
She said osteopaths have been successfully treating children for over 100 years.
“Through careful historytaking and examination, restrictions that could be contributing to the child’s problem are identified. These are then gently treated to restore normal function, leading to a return to health.”
Ms Henderson said osteopaths also work in conjunction with other health practitioners to provide the best care available, the goal being to assist children to grow into healthy adults.
