TWO police officers were assaulted in Wesburn last week over a speeding fine.
The Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol officers stopped a Holden ute about 1.15pm on Sunday 9 June.
They were set up with a radar gun on Station Street under the state-wide Operation Regal.
Yarra Ranges CIU detective Leading Senior Constable Matt Phelan said the driver of the car disagreed when the officers told him they had been speeding.
As the driver got out of the car and was handcuffed for not producing his licence or identifying himself, Ldg Sen Const Phelan said the driver kicked the officer in the shin.
“It then appears the girlfriend got out of the car and attacked the officer and the other officer who had come to assist,” he said.
He said in the meantime two car loads of friends driving ahead had returned to the scene and a second woman assaulted one of the officers.
Ldg Sen Const Phelan said he was disappointed with the behaviour of the three Yarra Valley people who were in their 20s.
“I don’t believe that a police officer should be attacked unprovoked, especially all over a potential $200 speeding ticket,” he said.
He said they had all been interviewed for assault and other charges, and released pending summons.
Neither of the police officers had required medical assistance he said, but one of the females was taken to hospital after being sprayed with pepper spray.
Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
