Drivers told: live to enjoy the new year

THE TAC (Traffic Accident Commission) is urging people out and about socialising this summer to plan ahead to avoid drinking and driving.
David Healy, senior manager of road safety for the TAC, said people going out should take advantage of a breathalyser program operating in local pubs and clubs.
“In some clubs, for just $1, people can use a breath tester and better monitor their alcohol consumption,” he said.
“It’s a small price to pay for something that could save your life.”
Over the 12 months ending in July this year, 52 drivers and riders killed on Victorian roads recorded a blood alcohol reading of .05 or above.
Mr Healy said drink driving is still a major contributor to road trauma and is encouraging people to use public transport, catch a taxi or organise a designated driver who won’t drink.
Mr Healy said when people are at or over the limit the risk of being involved in a crash is double.
The TAC has the following tips: Eat regularly if planning to drink alcohol, try to alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones, don’t drive if unsure about blood alcohol levels, the BAC can rise after someone has stopped drinking, drinking the night before can affect the BAC the next day, avoid the confusion and leave the car at home. Organise a designated driver who won’t drink. Alternatively use public transport or taxis.
