YARRA Glen Bowls Club is putting paid to the notion that bowls is a sport to be enjoyed only by retirees.
The median age of players at Yarra Glen is 37 putting the club very comfortably within the changing demographic across the sport in recent years.
With the club enjoying success at competition level and about to officially open its new greens, they are looking for new members.
The club has 55 members on the books but secretary Lyn Baker says they are in a great position to welcome new players.
The club will host four sessions of ‘Bare Foot Bowls’, along with a sausage sizzle from 7pm to 9pm on Friday nights 1 and 15 February and 1 and 15 March.
“Bare foot bowls means just that, you don’t have to have special footwear … some people come along and play in bare feet, others in thongs or sneakers,” Ms Baker said.
She said Barefoot Bowls provided an opportunity for anyone of any age to try their hand with the bowls, have a bit of fun and meet the club members in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
With many newcomers to the town, it is a great way to get to know people.
“There is a great social aspect to the club which is enjoyed by everyone,” Ms Baker said, adding that they have only recently put in some play equipment for youngsters in response to the growing number of people with young families who are taking up the sport.
There is no need to book … just drop in at the club which is in McKenzie Reserve off Anzac Avenue.
