YARRA Junction’s family centre has been spruced up to become more family friendly.
The building, on the corner of Hoddle Street and Warburton Highway, is the council’s main community link for the Upper Yarra.
The building offers services in maternal child care, early intervention, occasional care, Anglicare, Linc, counselling and support services as well as meeting facilities for the community.
People can also book in for VicRoads licence testing and town planning advice.
The council hopes the new look will entice people in to the building to seek the services and advice they need.
Almost 100 children from schools that took part in creating the mosaics as well as young adults joined staff and Mayor Jim Child to open the centre last Wednesday, 5 December.
Yarra Ranges Council Family and Children’s Services executive officer Christine Brown said organisers only gave Warburton artist Sioux Dollman a rough brief for the artwork.
Children and young adults from across the Upper Yarra took part in creating mosaic animals on a structure they can climb and play on.
Ms Dollman thanked the shire for allowing creativity and thanked everyone who took part in the project.
Mayor Jim Child officially opened the installation with the help of several school students.
He said he had strong ties to the building, which he worked in when he was first elected as a councillor for the Shire of Upper Yarra in 1982.
“The building now is a hidden gem and a lot of our local people really don’t know what happens in this building,” he said.
“It’s great to celebrate this event – what a fantastic result.”
Upper Yarra Rotary Club cooked a sausage sizzle in celebration.
