A MATURE-age plumbing novice has overcome his age to win one of the industry’s highest awards.
Thirty-three year old Mark Bidinost from Lilydale was presented with the Gold Medal Award in the Master Plumbers’ and Mechanical Services Association of Australia’s (MPMSAA) 100th Year Gold Medal and Training Awards by the Governor General of Victoria last month at Government House.
The unlikely winner has been a surprise success since he applied to do a plumping apprenticeship just a few years ago despite being trained in logistics and computers.
“It wasn’t like I knew I wanted to become a plumber,” Mr Bidinost said. “I am mechanically minded and I woke up one day and realised I needed to do something else.
Mr Bidinost enrolled at Box Hill Tafe and in his fourth year of study was given the break he was looking for, an apprenticeship.
According to Mr Bidinost, that was the hardest part.
“Getting that break was the most difficult thing,” Mr Bidinost said.
“Not a lot of people are willing to give you a go.”
Now armed with one of the industry’s biggest awards, getting work won’t be a problem anymore.
These days Mr Bidinost works for PJT Green Plumbing under the guidance of managing director Paul Talbot.
“Mark is a terrific worker and quite passionate about the industry,” Mr Talbot said.
“He is enthusiastic about green plumbing and keen to add value to my business, becoming involved in our growth plans as a hands-on employee.”
The Gold Medal Award was first presented to George Stone, a plumber from Williamstown in 1908.
CEO of the MPMSAA Ray Herbert says the association is committed to recognising talent with a view to boosting the industry and giving opportunities to those who have proved themselves.
“The Gold Medal is a prestigious award and this year celebrates its 100th year,” Mr Herbert said.
“Mark has proven himself in several areas of endeavour within the industry and we are proud to have such a worthy winner.”
