Boxing world title kicks in for Nick

By Melissa Donchi
LAUNCHING Place resident Nick Lundh is officially a world champion after he claimed the middleweight world title in kickboxing on Sunday night.
After just half an hour, Lundh was able to knock out his higher-ranking New South Wales opponent, Luke Maddison, in the second round at the QBH nightclub in central Melbourne.
“I pretty much had the fight under control from the outset, however, I did cop a kick towards the end of the first round causing a huge cut on the bridge of my nose which produced quite a lot of blood,” Lundh said.
“This created a sense of urgency and I managed to keep on him to knock him out in the middle of round two.”
Now a world champion, Lundh has thousands of dollars in prize money but says he is more amazed by his new title.
“It’s just incredible,” he said. “I’m the champion of the world, it’s a little hard to believe.” It’s a dream come true for the former number 10 ranked fighter, who considered retiring after he narrowly missed out on the world title in 2002.
But that all changed this year when he was approached by Fightforce Promotions to take on the number five ranked middleweight from New South Wales. In an extremely lucky coincidence the world title was vacated at the same time allowing Lundh one more shot at his dream.
“I certainly had fantastic support from the Yarra Valley,” Lundh said. “It was a packed house which felt amazing.”
Lundh will now have to keep up his gruelling training regime which includes morning and night gym sessions five days a week, in order to defend his title later in the year.
“It’s definitely worth it,” he said. “It’s been a great experience and I’m already looking forward to my next fight.”
