MORE than 30 whippets and their owners took to the Healesville Greyhound Association track on Sunday for a bit of exercise and fun.
Whippet owners from the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and as far afield as Pakenham, inner Melbourne and Gippsland took part in the recently formed Yarra Valley Whippet Social Racing Club’s (YVWSRC) second official get-together.
The dogs raced from a standing start in an atmosphere, which had more of the country athletics meeting about it than the usual serious business of greyhound racing.
YVWSRC president Linda Meerman said the day was a huge success.
“With whippets if you go somewhere and the dog has a good time, it means you have a good time too,” she said.
“The dogs just love it and there is a tremendous social aspect to the day for owners and dogs.”
Ms Meerman said the next meeting on 2 September would provide whippets and their owners with a chance to take part in more structured races.
Whippet owners who would like to meet with other “whippeteers” and enjoy the fun of competition can contact Ms Meerman on 5962 5091 or email to yvwrc@hotmail.com.
Whippets love a good day out
