Unit development gets the go ahead

THE Shire of Yarra Ranges has approved an application for the construction of three units in Lilydale despite receiving two objections.
The application was for a doublestorey, threebedroom unit, and two singlestorey units in Nicholas Street.
After notifying nearby residents of the proposed development, the council received two objections.
Nearby residents said that the additional units would increase traffic in the area and that a doublestorey dwelling would block the view.
Shire director of planning, building and health James AmourReid said one of the objectors said that the area had changed socially in the last 25 years and that he believed it was because of low rent units in the area.
However, Mr AmourReid said this was not an issue to be addressed or considered through a planning application process.
He said the objectors were also concerned about the construction of the doublestorey dwelling as they felt it would invade their privacy as the occupant of the unit would have a view of their yards.
However, the council last week agreed that the proposal would protect and enhance the character of Nicholas Street and approved the application.
