THE Warburton Advancement League’s (WAL) public meeting on Wednesday night was an eye-opener for many of the more than 40 community members who attended.
“Quite visibly the audience was gob-smacked at what has been undertaken by the league during its 53 years of service,” said WAL secretary Sue Slusarek.
The meeting was an information and recruitment night for WAL, which is responsible for many of the facilities and attractions locals, and tourists enjoy in the town.
Two of WAL’s greatest supporters, Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato and local shire councillor, Cr Monika Keane, spoke about the enormous contribution made by league members.
“If all towns and communities had such a passionate group, one level of government could almost become obsolete,” Ms Lobato said.
Their encouragement to people to get involved was reiterated by Ms Slusarek.
“If the league is to continue its successes for the next 50 years, members of the community must keep it alive by stepping up to the plate,” she said.
WAL president Jesse James said half a dozen new members had signed up on the night and others had flagged their intention to get involved.
