TOM BEGE’S philosophy is that students should leave school with a love of learning, well-developed social skills and a global perspective on life.
For the new principal of Healesville High School, the pathway to that goal involves the whole gamut of academic, social and administration tasks which come with the role, he says, is very much about leadership.
Mr Bege came to Healesville in the last term of 2006 with 25 years’ experience as a teacher and five years as a principal.
While Healesville is closer to Melbourne than his previous Western Districts’ school, the father of two boys, one in year 12, the other at university, says many of the issues faced by the students, teachers and community here are much the same.
“As well as reflecting on and improving the quality of teaching and learning practices the provision of new facilities, which promote individualised learning, innovative teaching practices and incorporate new technologies to support teaching and learning, is a very high priority for the school.”
“We need to ensure that what we design and eventually build suits the needs of this community and our children.”
Lifting the profile of the school within the community is another important “to do”.
Much of last year was spent getting to know the students, teachers and the community and, he says, he is impressed by the talent and skills of the students, and of the ability of his staff to nurture those attributes.
“I think the community doesn’t have a clear perception of what our school has to offer kids and we need to put it forward in terms of its importance and place as a school within the community.”
Developing new programs, which really cater for the needs of all students, will be part of that process.
“My aim is to develop the school as a school of excellence which is of the community and for the community,” Mr Bege said.
That doesn’t mean academic excellence alone. He said the ability of young people to lead productive lives, to be able to transfer the skills they learn at school and to make connections in real life are all part of the striving for excellence which ultimately will be reflected in the community they live in.
“We must explore all pathways for all students and to provide the means for all students to achieve success in their chosen pathways.”
The new boss says he is happy with his inheritance of a group of teachers who are committed and enthusiastic.
“To come in with that basis already there makes my job a whole lot easier,” he said.
“It allows me to concentrate on the leadership aspects of my position.”
“Healesville High School is committed to its community and to realise each individual’s potential through engaging and creative educational programs, enterprise, communication and teamwork.”
