CORANDERRK Aboriginal reserve in Healesville will be highlighted in a talk by Dr Richard Broome, one of Australia’s leading historians.
Dr Broome, associate professor of history at La Trobe University, will present Right Behaviour – Coranderrk in the 1880s at the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV) on Tuesday, 13 February.
The talk will look at a controversial time when indigenous people were dependent on a system of reserves and rations for survival. Coranderrk was built in 1863 and continued as an Aboriginal community for 80 years despite numerous attempts to shut it down.
As part of his talk, Dr Broome will explore the accounts of Aboriginal witnesses to a parliamentary inquiry.
The one hour talk is at the RHSV, 239 A’Beckett Street, Melbourne, starting at 5.45pm. Phone 93267 9288 to book.
