Police fume at road carnage

HEALESVILLE police sergeant Tony Van Gorp lashed out at visiting motorcyclists last week after a number of serious crashes on local roads.
“It’s nothing more than carnage and it’s frustrating that victims continually seem to be from other areas of Melbourne.
Sgt Van Gorp said police and TAC messages seem to be falling on deaf ears and the cost is horrendous.
“These types of accidents have major impacts on individuals and families as well as their cost to the community.
“There seems to be a pattern that the majority of riders are responsible and ride to their capabilities and the law but a minority seem to be focused on riding for thrills and disregarding the safety of themselves and other,” he said.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges runs a number of motorbike safety rides around some of the shire’s main tourist roads with the aim of familiarising riders with some of the pitfalls they can expect to encounter in the area.
Anyone who knows of riders who don’t live in the shire but who regularly ride the Toolangi, Black Spur, Reefton or other popular rides would be doing them a favour to put them in touch with the program. Phone the shire on 1300 368 333.
