WHAT a cold day for cricket it is was on Saturday.
With snow in places like Kinglake and very brisk conditions at all other grounds the vest and jumpers got their first airing of the season.
But the Friday night rains, which heralded the cold weather, were very welcome in settling the dust.
In the Strachan Shield, the first two-day game of the season commenced with Woori Yallock hosting Seville who batted first and were dismissed for 248 (Travis Selby 39, Gary Kear 38 and Andrew Sharp 4/63).
Coldstream dismissed Warburton-Millgrove for 138 (Steve Darwell 47, Michael Walker 37). Neil Harvey 4/30 and Liam Doughty 4/39 bowled well for Coldstream,
Wandin in their first match back at home for the season hosted neighbouring Mt Evelyn who reached 9/272 at stumps with Ben Theile 67, Kane Jones 99 and Chris Anderson 38. Wayne Ross 4/110 and Jarrod Bayliss 3/36 bowled well for the home side.
Yarra Panthers travelled to Queen’s Park at Healesville and batting first were 8/299 (S. McCartney 86, Max Clemminson 74). Tom Horners 2/42 was Healesville’s star bowler.
Silvan at home were dismissed for 267 (Jamie Cornford 59, John Harvie 53 and C. Reynolds 41) against Yarra Junction, who were helped by Darren Lever 5/58.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy, Marysville were dismissed for 77. Luke Sarre 6/28 and D. Kraus 4/22 for Yarra Glen took all the wickets. In reply, Gruyere Districts were 3/98 with M. Tillney 36 not out.
Hoddles Creek were 3/136 (Brenton Derix 55) against Launching Place United 131 (Tyson Wheeler 50, J Derix 2/8).
Yarra Glen scored 130 (Jason Watkins 80, Brenton Styles 5/39) with Kinglake in reply 3/28 (L. Orren 2/9) at stumps on day one.
Other highlights for the day were in the Strachan Shield Reserve:
Coldstream with Mark Williams 84; Seville Paul Pleming 101 not out for Warburton-Millgrove, Brad Winzer of Warburton-Millgrove took 5/69 and B. Taylor 3/49; Mt Evelyn’s Ian Hawkey took 4/44 .
In DJSS 3, Warburton-Millgrove reached 6/358 (Dave Swankie 201 not out).
No doubt with the scores being low, in higher Warburton grades many of the 3rd and 4th performing players will be promoted next round.
Cold snap keeps the scores down
