Dinner to recall mining drama

UNION boss and Australia Labor Party (ALP) rising star Bill Shorten will visit the Yarra Valley this month.
Mr Shorten was one of the men who oversaw the rescue of trapped Beaconsfield miners, Todd Russell and Grant Webb, in Tasmania earlier this year.
He is the national president of the Australian Workers Union and Federal ALP candidate for Maribyrnong.
Mr Shorten will be guest speaker at a fund raising dinner to be held in Healesville on Saturday, 21 October to support the re-election campaign of Seymour MP Ben Hardman.
Trevor Mays, president of the Healesville and Marysville branch of the ALP, said the evening offered friends and supporters of the ALP an opportunity to hear Mr Shorten speak in person.
“Bill will speak on a range of topics including talking about the Beaconsfield disaster earlier this year,” he said.
“He will also talk about changes to industrial relations laws and how they affect business operators and workers.”
Mr Mays said the dinner would include a two-course meal and tea and coffee.
“There will be a full bar available and throughout the evening we’ll have raffles and a silent auction,” he said.
The fund raising dinner will be held at Sanctuary House Motel Function Room, 326 Badger Creek Road, Healesville, at 7.30pm.
Tickets to the event are $35 concession and $40 for full price.
Tables of 10 people cost $300 and all tickets must be paid for in advance. Contact Trevor Mays on 5962 1919 or email Trevor.mays.alp@optusnet.com.au
