YARRA Valley winery, Lillydale Estate, has won gold at one of the country’s most respected regional wine shows, the 2006 Cowra Wine Show.
Lillydale Estate’s 2005 Chardonnay was awarded a gold medal at the show, which culminated in a presentation dinner in Cowra, on Saturday, 5 August.
Max McWilliam, from Lillydale Estate, said the gold medal winning Chardonnay was a complex wine.
“It is a fine example of the renaissance of Chardonnay, showing elegance, refinement and balance, and being the epitome of style,” he said.
Mr McWilliam’s said the 2005 Chardonnay would join two other gold medal-winning wines in the current Lillydale Estate range, the 2001 Lillydale Estate Cabernet Merlot and the 2004 Lillydale Estate Gerwurtraminer.
The Lillydale Estate gold medal won in Cowra added to the overall win for McWilliam’s wines, with the Australian family-owned wine company taking home the Most Successful Exhibitor Trophy.
Overall, the company won two trophies in Cowra, seven gold medals, 15 silver medals and 34 bronze medals.
Cowra, which is located approximately 300km west of Sydney, is renowned as one of News South Wales’ leading regional food and wine destinations.
The inaugural Cowra Wine show was staged in 1983, attracting 214 entries. In 2005, the show’s 23rd year, the show received a staggering 2985 entries from a total of 456 exhibitors.
