THE tall ship Young Endeavour will set sail next year on voyages which include the opportunity to explore Australia’s wilderness regions and remote coastlines.
Young people aged between 16 and 23 can apply for a berth as part of the Young Endeavour youth training program in 2007. No previous sailing experience is required.
Twenty-four youth crew members learn all aspects of sailing a 44 metre, square-rigged tall ship on the open sea including climbing the 30 metre mast, setting sails, navigating, keeping watch and taking the helm.
A voyage on the Young Endeavour develops skills in teamwork, communication, leadership and motivation.
Youth Crew members are selected by ballot and applicants can apply online at www.youngendeavour.-gov.au or by phoning 1800 020 444 up until 1 October.
The 11 day voyage cost $1495 with financial assistance available, subject to conditions, to low-income applicants.
The Young Endeavour was a gift from the UK to the people of Australia to mark the Bicentenary in 1988 and is operated by specially trained Royal Australian Navy crew.
