Over 50 residents and Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Child joined award-winning landscape designer Phillip Johnson at the launch of the Healing in Our Gardens program.

On Saturday, 3 September, Yarra Ranges Council launched the program of garden-inspired events aimed at helping residents revive their gardens a year after the most devastating storm event in the state’s history.

At the launch, residents were able to learn more about the program, meet community garden and environmental groups, as well as local nurseries, organisations and individuals who are partnering with Council to bring the Healing in our Gardens program to you.

Already a suite of events have been planned including: a permaculture workshop with David Holmgren, tree hollows walk and talk through storm damaged bushland, and a night walk with environmental enthusiast Tim Bawden.

Speaking at the event, Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Child hoped residents who had experienced storm damage would take advantage of the program and sign up for the many future events that are still to come.

“I’m sure that so many of you have nurtured, cared and tended for your gardens for so many years, and to see that gone is devastating, but with the support of Council and our wonderful local Landcare, gardening groups, nurseries and businesses who are partnering with us, you’ll now be able to tap into local expertise and knowledge and take part in free events, activities and engage with a vast array of gardening resources.”

“At Council, our role is to support our residents and though we know there are challenges still ahead, our gardens and environment can give us so much respite from the stresses in our lives.”

“It is my hope that this project will become a living, evolving community partnered healing and environmental project for people impacted by the storm that enables us all collaborate, share knowledge and resources, and ultimately help each other.”
