Works are almost complete at Seville Recreation Reserve to allow Seville Tennis Club to play night games.
Yarra Ranges Council is converting all six courts from two hard courts and four sand courts to synthetic grass surfaces, with drainage improvements, fencing and new LED lights installed on all.
The project which started in July this year and is expected to be complete by early next year.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said the upgrade would mean the club could play in all weather conditions and expand their night games to run additional competitions in the evening.
“It’s wonderful to see the court renewal coming together,” he said.
“Tennis is a very social and competitive game and it’s no surprise that more residents are wanting to take it up.”
Seville Tennis Club president Ray Van Weert said the synthetic grass courts would mean games could continue following any rain.
“Before, if it was wet, we couldn’t play on the court at all,” he said.
“It was also very dry and dusty coming into summer.
“The new synthetic grass courts are easy to maintain and easy to use all year around.”
Mr Van Weert said the group would look into playing in the Lilydale District completion now that all six courts had lighting, which was up to competition standard.
“Converting all courts to the one playing surface means the club can hold tournament matches,” he said.
