Helping children cross since 1972

Pam Ramadge from Wandin North is the longest-serving school crossing supervisor in Victoria, having devoted 45 years to the service.

Wandin Yallock Primary students, parents and staff thanked her for guiding students safely across the road for more than four decades on Friday 7 September,

“I wouldn’t have done it so long if you hadn’t been so fabulous,“ she said.

“Not just you, but your mums and your dads and your grandparents.”

Filling in for her sister as a supervisor for three months in 1972, Ms Ramadge quickly became an enduring part of the school community and has since guided three generation of families across the road.

“I began as a volunteer and eventually it became a paid role,” she said.

“I was thinking of giving it up recently but I enjoy it too much.”

She has watched Prep students grow into young adults and some are now teaching at the school.

“I have seen the next generation bringing their new Preppies to the school,” she said.

“The best part is feeling connected with the community.

“A lot of people recognise me at the shops – they say ‘aren’t you that school crossing lady on Beenak Road? I go past you in the car everyday’ – which is nice.”

Although the weather can be freezing, Ms Ramadge said she had always been “a morning person” and enjoyed the fact she was able to help children cross the road rain, hail or shine.

“I wear a fluro, water-proof hoodie and lots of layers of clothes,” she said.

“Every five years I receive a certificate of appreciation. But seeing the children is all the thanks I need.”

Ms Ramadge said she believed that children were just as wonderful as they were 45 years ago.

“The kids are really special. They behave just as well as they did back then. They really are a nice lot,” she said.

“I have had three children and one grandchild myself.

“I always try and have a big chat with them and take an interest in what they do.

“Sometimes they teach you something.

“One child tried to teach me how to use chopsticks but I just couldn’t get the hang of it.

“They have cooking classes at school and share food they have cooked with me so I am part of their little family.”

Ms Ramadge was one of four Yarra Ranges supervisors nominated as Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year.
