Healesville police are investigating extensive burnout damage at Queens Park, believed to have occurred early on the morning of Sunday 9 July.
Police believe the burnouts came from a four-wheel drive and that offenders used bolt cutters to break through a chain that surrounds the car park.
Offenders have continued onto the grass area next to the Grace Burn Creek, doing burnouts which cover an area of around 100m.
Yarra Ranges Council contractors were at the scene on Monday 10 July, erecting wooden bollards to prevent it from happening again.
Contractors said it was “heartbreaking” to see such reckless damage and were concerned it would cost thousands of dollars to regrow the grass that had been ripped up.
Yarra Ranges Council posted on its Facebook page that the council would begin reseeding within the next eight to 10 weeks and were disappointed to hear about the damage.
“Our Parks and Bushlands Team will soon begin the clean-up, with grass reseeding expected to take 8-10 weeks,” the council posted.
